Waynad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayand wildlife sanctuary situates along the northern region of Wayanad, which is bordering Coorg district of Karnataka.
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is connected to Muthanga and to the Nagarhole National Park in Karnataka, and is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Flanked by towering mountain ranges on all four sides, Tholpetty covers an area of 345 SqKm. The sanctuary's deciduous forest cover, rich in bio-diversity, is home to 900-odd wild elephants, apart from numerous other species of animals.

Ecotourism in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Muthanga and Tholpetty are the two ecotourism centers in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Visits to these ecotourism centers provide unforgettable wilderness experience, frequent sightings of free ranging wildlife like herds of elephants, guars, deers, monkeys, tigers, leopards, bears, many species of reptiles, fishes, butterflies, birds including vultures etc, valuable nature education information from interpretation centres etc Medicinal plants’ garden, Birth Star Plants’ (Zodiac Plants) Garden, Muthanga Elephant Camp with 3 tuskers and one female calf, traditional tribal folk lore etc are other attractions in Muthanga.

Ecotourism in Muthanga and Tholpetty is much helpful in creating deep conservation awareness in the minds of visitors. It is much educative and recreational too. It is a main source of livelihood income for local tribes including tourist guides. Ecotourism in these two centers are managed by Muthanga and Tholpetty Eco-Development Committees (EDCs) under supervision of Kerala forest department.

Begur Wildlife Sanctuary:
This sanctuary is home to many exotic species elephant , bison, spotted deer, tiger, leopard, bear and wild boar of fauna. 20 km east or Mananthavady.

Several species of animals like are found in this sanctuary , which is just 100 kms from Vythiri. The best season to visit is Dec-to May, when animals from the neighbouring Bandhipur, Nagarhole and Mudamalai frequent this sanctuary due to scarcity of water elsewhere. Day trips are organized from various resorts in Wayanad.
 

Jungle Safari

Tholpetty Wayanad is a Wildlife Sanctuary situated at thirteen kilometer distance from Thirunelly. Tholpetty Wayanad is on the road to Kodagu located in Karnataka. Wayanad wild life sanctuary Tholpetty is located at one end of Muthunga. The Sanctuary at the lower end of Muthunga and Tholpetty Sanctuary comprise Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Children will enjoy visiting this sanctuary and seeing different kinds of wildlife and avifaunal species. The elephant population of the sanctuary is close to 900. Other kinds of animals that can be seen in the sanctuary are spotted deer, boar, langurs, and bisons. Tourist guide who will guide you through the sanctuary is found at the entrance of this sanctuary. A two hour safari by jeep is arranged by the forest department into the park. The timings allotted for tourists to explore this sanctuary is between 7 to 9 AM in morning and 3 to 5 PM in the evening. It is mandatory that a guide should accompany you. Wayanad wild life sanctuary Tholpetty is a brilliant trekking spot where you can explore a lot. The types of deers seen here are red deer and spotted deer. You can also view wild boar, peacocks and peahens. During their courting season, male peacock exhibits its brightly colored tail fully wide open. You can also spot Indian Bison and monkeys. Some rare kind of snakes can also been seen in Wayanad wild life sanctuary Tholpetty located near Mananthavady.
